February 28, 2006 was another unique day in my life. The little town of Eureka Springs, AR, held its’ first annual Mardi Gras Parade. Although the participation was not large, lots of fun was had by the merry makers, and the people along the parade route. With the help of my female friend in Eureka Springs (who organized the event), I dressed as a 1920’s flapper girl, and did my part to encourage the merriment—throwing beads, waving at the observers, and participating in the various planned stops along the parade route for ‘refreshments,’ including some excellent jambalaya prepared by a New Orleans cook who was a Hurricane Katrina refugee.
I returned the next week to visit my friend, and found I was the 'centerfold' of a well-known publication! Well, O.K., so it was the local weekly newspaper, but it is well known in Eureka Springs!
Plans are already underway for a bigger and better Mardi Gras next year, and hopefully it will become an annual event.
